The successive waves of Russian emigrants who have come to Australia over the past 124 years, have almost all been drawn to our shores by the same reasons: wars, lack of sufficient arable land, changes in socio-economic and political structures.
Queensland's vast territory and relatively small population made it an attractive prospect, a land of opportunity for starting a new life, working their own land free of the restraints that existed in the Old World.

First Russian Honorary Consul to Brisbane - Benjamin Wickham Macdonald from 1909 to 1917

Benjamin Wickham Macdonald was the first Russian Honorary Consul to Brisbane, officially serving from 1909 to 1917.
On 25 March 1909 he was recognized as Vice-Consul (Honorary) for Russia, at Brisbane and less than 3 months later, on 3 June, his appointment was upgraded to Consul (Honorary) for Russia, at Brisbane.
Both appointments were advertised in the Queensland Government Gazette and signed by his Excellency, Lieutenant-Governor W. Kidston.
